    GENERAL INFO ABOUT ELECTROCAUTERY

    What is Electrocautery

    Electrocauterization is the process of destroying tissue (or cutting through soft tissue) using heat conduction from a metal probe heated by electric current. The procedure stops bleeding from small vessels (larger vessels being ligated). Electrocautery applies high frequency alternating current by a unipolar or bipolar method. It can be a continuous waveform to cut tissue, or intermittent to coagulate tissue.

    Working Principle of Electrocautery

    Electrocautery has 2 different basic modes which are monopolar and bipolar.

    1. Monopolar mode, Pen type cautery tip and patient plate
    2. Bipolar mode, special 2 headed cautery tip no patient plate needed

    Alternate Current frequency is chosen above 200 kHz (mostly 350 kHz) so that it does not have stimulate effect on neural system

    The electric current and voltage of the electrocautery is supplied by a generator. Circuit is completed through, active electrode, patient and patient electrode (in monopolar applications, return electrode). The tissue of the patient forms the impedance (which must come from above the electrons of the current). In bipolar applications, the forceps type electrode is used and the circuit is completed between these electrodes. One of them is the active electrode and the other is the return electrode.

    Warnings about Electrocautery

    Electrodes must be attached to patient
    Right eletrodes must be chosen.
    Using disposable sets several times may be hazardous.
    Safety tests and calibration must be done periodically
